Adult Ballet and Your Brain
We take such liberties with our bodies and our mind. When we are young we believe our facilities will always be there for us and in reality we probably don’t even think about it. It’s when you reach a certain age – reality sets in and life becomes precious. Recently in the news a top "preventive method" we can implement to help our brain remain active is exercise. Ballet is exercise but it is so much more than that. Ballet is about coordination. The head, back, chest, arms legs and hips. So many things, so easy in concept but so hard to actualize. Therein is the fun – always striving for something out of reach. Ballet is about musicality and how you phrase movement to music. Ballet is about learning and building those skill sets both from yourself, your classmates and teacher. That involves visually learning combinations and understanding a ballet vocabulary, listening to corrections and translating that to execution. Patience is also key and knowing where to place the emphasis on technique or depending on where you are in your technique – less is more -- is really more. Getting your brain to talk to yourself requires knowledge of yourself both physically and mentally. How do you operate optimally and what ways of learning work best for you? There are many different schools of ballet, and many different teachers and ways to approach class – it’s finding the best one for you….and making that brain connect with a wonderful art form – ballet.
